Let Yourself Feel
If we feel our own feelings, we can hold space for others as they feel theirs.
The way to heal and move through painful experiences is to let yourself feel.
Many of us try to escape feeling negative emotions by numbing them with drugs, alcohol, food, busyness, sex, or other things. Sometimes we dissociate so that we don’t have to feel uncomfortable emotions.
The problem is when we numb negative emotions, we also numb positive ones. When we dissociate, we aren’t able to be present.
Instead of trying to suppress your feelings, allow yourself to feel them. Be curious and non-judgmental towards your emotions. When did you feel like this before? Speak gently to yourself and to your frightened inner child. Extend kindness to yourself and practice self-compassion.
Find healthy ways to process your emotions, such as writing in a journal or expressing them in artwork.
