Leaving Church

In 2010, best selling author Anne Rice wrote: “For those who care, and I understand if you don’t: Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being ‘Christian’ or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to ‘belong’ to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.”

Anne Rice left the organized church because of the lack of love she witnessed. She refused to hate gay people. She refused to hate Democrats. She refused to hate science, etc.

She is not alone. Millennials are leaving the church in droves. There is a growing number of people who have become disillusioned and have decided they are better off without organized religion.

Many of those that have left the organized church still love Jesus and desire to follow His teachings. They are longing for truth, beauty, love, freedom, transformation, and genuine connection.

If Christianity is to have a renaissance in the United States, it must get back to the simplicity of the Gospel, which is LOVE.

My wife and I did the same thing as Anne Rice. We left the institutional church and do not call ourselves christian, yet we remain followers of Jesus. It was good to read about Anne and to know there are many others who are doing the same, giving up on the christian religion to follow the example of Jesus.
