Deconstruction/Reconstruction
Many people are using the term “deconstruction” to describe what they are experiencing on their faith journey.
“Deconstruction” is an academic term for the systematic pulling apart of the belief system you were raised in.
I was indoctrinated with so much fear in the faith community I was birthed into as a child and the faith community I chose to be a part of as an adult.
Fear is also one of the major reasons that keeps people from starting the process of deconstruction. Fear of rejection, fear of being alone, fear of losing business revenue, fear of the loss of certainty, fear of eternal damnation, etc.
Almost all deconstruction has some element of grief. You are leaving something behind that was a big part of your life for a long time. Sometimes deconstruction involves a loss of friends and family and that can be painful.
Deconstruction was never intended to be the whole journey.
Reconstruction happens when you start putting things back together again. Reconstruction is about growing, changing, and evolving.
I’ve been deconstructing fear-based beliefs and reconstructing love-based beliefs.
I’ve likened my journey to leaving “Christian City” and heading towards the “Kingdom of God.”
I grew up in the church system, spent over fifty years within the walls of religion. The last fifteen years my wife and I have been going through the deconstruction/reconstruction process. It was hard at first, but we are so glad we started this journey. Neither of us would want to go back within the system. We are excited about the freedom we have found to love God, love all people, and not worry about the doctrines and traditions of the christian church system.
