Effects of Stress
Most health issues are rooted in stress. (Medical research estimates approximately 90 percent of illness and disease is stress-related.)
Many people live in fear and anticipation of something bad happening. When we don’t feel safe, it activates our sympathetic nervous system. When it is activated, it causes physiological changes such as increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, digestive disturbances, etc. The hormone epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) is released into the bloodstream.
Unresolved trauma from the past affects our nervous system. Our body is always remembering. Implicit memories are unconscious memories that can cause us to become hyper-vigilant. Something in the present can trigger an unconscious memory of the past and cause a health crisis or an emotional breakdown.
This is why we need to go to the root of what is causing the stress. The key to healing is learning how to rest our nervous system and resolving trauma that is stored in our subconscious memories and in our bodies.
